[Perfume Review] Diptyque Olene Eau de Toilette

딥디크 올렌느

Diptyque OLENE EAU DE TOILETTE

Volume

50ml, 100ml

Perfume Story

A perfume capturing the scent of thousands of flowers.
Diptyque usually illustrates the scent on their labels, and they are accurate enough to be quite helpful when blind buying. In that sense, seeing Flora, the goddess of flowers, drawn on the Olene label tells you immediately that it is a fragrance packed full of floral notes.

올렌느2

A pleasant evening with a gentle breeze blowing.
Amidst the soft scent of wisteria and jasmine, the fragrance of honeysuckle is occasionally carried by the wind.
Followed by the scents of countless other flowers.

Fragrance Notes

Diptyque generally doesn’t use the traditional top, middle, and base notes. Instead, they compose their fragrances with raw materials + an olfactory accident (hidden note).

Raw Materials: Wisteria, Honeysuckle, Jasmine

OLFACTORY ACCIDENT
(Hidden Note): Narcissus

Scent & Wear Review

Because Diptyque skips the complex note pyramid and instead combines raw materials with one special hidden note, testing and wearing it feels much less complicated. Just like its bottle, the fragrance composition is simple yet highly aesthetic.

When you first spray it, a beautiful floral scent blooms. It smells somewhat like acacia flowers, but it is actually narcissus. I think it’s because narcissus and acacia share a similar scent profile (just my personal opinion).

Wisteria and jasmine lay down the base, giving off a faint, delicate aura. When the scent of narcissus is added to this, it becomes a cool, pure, and innocent fragrance.
It has a very simple and clean vibe. Narcissus stands right at the center of this simplicity, purity, and cleanliness. In this regard, Diptyque’s concept of the ‘olfactory accident’ hidden note is incredibly crucial and charming.

Back to the scent itself—if you smell it closely, it feels as if they harvested a massive amount of tiny flowers, compressed them tightly, and squeezed out a single drop of pure fragrance.
It feels incredibly rich, yet incredibly subtle at the same time.
I think this is exactly where it might become polarizing. Those who focus on the richness might find it too strong, while those who notice the subtlety will find this non-sweet floral scent highly attractive.

Images That Come to Mind

올렌느느낌

Bedding slightly chilled by the morning breeze.
As you curl up and snuggle deeper into the blankets, a subtle floral soap scent gently rises from that white, cozy duvet.

Celebrities That Come to Mind

신세경

Actress Shin Se-kyung.

A pure and neat scent just like her image. It has a white, innocent, and clear vibe.
It feels like a white flower swaying in the wind, yet never looking fragile.
It goes perfectly with the word “pure.” It reminds me of someone who has a clear, clean face but a very strong inner self, which is why I thought of Shin Se-kyung.

If I had to pick a male counterpart, it gives off a vibe similar to actor Im Si-wan during his Misaeng (Jang Geu-rae) days.

Recommended Seasons

Spring, Autumn
There absolutely must be a brisk, chilly breeze. It shouldn’t be freezing, but wearing this on a hot day carries the risk of nausea. It’s a scent that truly shines and becomes charming when carried by a crisp wind, so I highly recommend it for spring and fall.

Why I Recommend It (Pros)

The bottle is beautiful. Honestly, for fragrance lovers, this is a huge selling point. The bottle design is highly aesthetic. With its simple and sensible look, it’s often used as an interior decor piece. If you look on Instagram, everyone seems to have a Diptyque perfume, which is definitely a plus.
The scent is beautiful too. A subtle, fresh white floral scent with zero sweetness. You can feel the sharp, natural cleanliness of green notes alongside it, which makes it feel even more innocent and pure.
If you are looking for an innocent, pure, and clean floral scent, I highly recommend Olene.
The texture feels cozy but the temperature is cool, reminiscent of a clean soap scent. You’ll often get compliments that you smell like you “just stepped out of the shower.”

Points of Caution (Cons)

First of all, it’s expensive. I say this in almost every perfume review, but it really is pricey. Anyway, the cost is a drawback.
If you are not feeling well or the perfume doesn’t mix well with your skin chemistry, instead of fresh flowers, you might just get a strong indolic (urine-like) floral scent.
Even if that doesn’t happen, if you dislike white florals, the powdery vibe might make you nauseous and give you a headache. It can be quite cloying.
And honestly, it might come off smelling like air freshener to some. You can occasionally catch a whiff of something quite artificial.
Diptyque claims to pursue the scents of nature, but sometimes it feels incredibly artificial, exactly like the smell of scented tissue paper.
On top of that, a sharp, piercing note can sometimes trigger a headache. When this happens, you miss out entirely on the subtle, pure floral vibe, and instead, you are left smelling nothing but a harsh, strong perfume heavily infused with floral notes.
